What Is Buddleja?

 
Buddleia or Buddleja, commonly referred to as the butterfly bush, is a deciduous shrub renowned for its elongated clusters of tubular flowers. When and Where To Plant

 
  1. Buddleia thrives in full sunlight, so select a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  2. Plant Buddleia in well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH. Amend the soil with organic matter to enhance fertility.
  3. Spring or autumn is the ideal time to plant Buddleia. Ensure the soil has warmed up before planting.
  4. Provide adequate spacing between plants to allow for good air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.
 

Caring for Buddleja

 

  1. Buddleia is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply during dry spells, and avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot.
  2. Feed Buddleia with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen to promote more flowers and less foliage.
  3. Regular pruning encourages a bushier growth habit and more blooms. Prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead or weak growth.
  4. Buddleia is generally resistant to pests and diseases. Keep an eye out for spider mites or caterpillars, and treat promptly if necessary.
