Nasturtium ‘Whirlybird Tangerine’ is a blaze of colour in summer, producing masses of big, vibrant orange flowers for months on mounds of bright green foliage. This compact annual is fantastic in pots or borders, flowering all summer. The colourful flowers are edible, perfect for brightening up summer salads.

Sow indoors

Scatter seeds thinly over the surface of firm, pre-watered compost in trays, covering seeds with 1cm of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 15-18°C or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room.

Grow on

When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When plants are 5cm tall, transplant 5cm apart to trays of potting compost or singly into small pots. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10°C.

Plant out

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out 30cm apart when risk of frost has passed. Water well until established.

Sow outdoors

Sow seeds in pre-watered soil at a depth of 1.5cm in their flowering positions. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge, and water well in dry spells. Thin seedlings to around 30cm apart.

Tips

Nasturtiums do best in poor soils without feeding. Can be used in companion planting schemes for chemical free growing.

How to grow

Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
