Fast-growing Phyllostachys aurea (golden bamboo) makes an elegant hedge or screening plant, with its tall, graceful green canes turning golden yellow when grown in full sun. The lush yellow-green foliage contrasts well with the colourful canes, adding life and movement to the garden as they flutter in the breeze. This striking bamboo holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Although it’s a running bamboo, Phyllostachys aurea is said to be less invasive than many other Phyllostachys bamboos, behaving more like a clumping bamboo. However, it’s still advisable to use a non-perishable bamboo root barrier when planting it in the ground, as an extra precaution to stop it spreading.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Guide to Shrub Plant Sizes
Our Shrubs come in sizes from 9cm pots up to 15L. All are mature enough to be planted out into their final position in the garden.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot. If you have ordered your shrub during autumn or winter it may appear yellow or have no leaves. The plant is still healthy and ready to plant but looks different during different seasons.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Planting instructions:
Unpack and as long as the weather is favourable, put outside as soon as it arrives and give it a water.
When ready to plant, ensure it’s positioned in the right location and aspect in the garden.
Keep the area around it clear to avoid overcrowding which reduces its establishment and growth.
Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy, mix in a soil improver before backfilling. We also recommend adding plant feed into the hole before back filling to help establishment and growth.
Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
Feeding and aftercare: Keep it well watered and fed for establishment and growth. Trim in summer if needed to maintain the shape of the plant. Can be mulched in autumn/spring each year.
Planting and Flowering Months:
Planting and flowering months are subject to seasonal weather conditions. Shrubs can be planted all year round but take extra care during the cold winter months to avoid frost and hot summer months with extra watering.
