Fill Your Home with Fabulous Winter Flowers

  • Vibrant flowers through the winter months
  • Attractive cascading green stems
  • Easy to grow indoors
  • Long lived with the right care
  • A lovely living gift

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) really comes into its own when winter arrives. As the buds open, the cascading green stems become covered with colourful blooms in pink, magenta and white, creating a fabulous display for windowsills, shelves and tables.

It’s also a lovely choice for gifting, bringing something living and colourful into the home at a time of year when there’s little flowering outside. Unlike cut flowers, it can be enjoyed long after the festive season, making it a thoughtful present for anyone who loves plants.

With the right care, plants can live for many years, producing a fresh display of flowers each winter. Between blooms, the distinctive segmented green stems keep the plant looking attractive, giving you a houseplant to enjoy throughout the year.

How to Grow

Where to Position Your Plant

Choose a bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, particularly during summer, and keep the plant away from cold draughts and direct heat from radiators.

Watering

Water when the top of the compost starts to dry, allowing any excess to drain away. Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera prefers more regular moisture, but the roots should never be left sitting in water.

Feeding

Feed regularly during the growing season with a suitable liquid houseplant feed. Reduce feeding as growth slows and the plant approaches its flowering period.

Humidity

This plant naturally enjoys a more humid environment than desert cacti. Keep it away from very hot, dry air and consider standing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles if your home is particularly dry.

Repotting

There’s no need to repot every year. Move into a slightly larger pot when necessary, using a free-draining houseplant or cactus compost.

Flowering & Aftercare

Encouraging Flower Buds

Shorter days and cooler conditions in autumn help encourage flower buds to form. Reduce watering slightly during this period, without allowing the compost to dry out completely.

Once the Buds Appear

Once flower buds start to develop, return to more regular watering and try to keep conditions consistent. Avoid repeatedly moving or turning the pot, as sudden changes in light or temperature can cause developing buds to drop.

During Flowering

Keep the compost lightly moist while the plant is in bloom and position it somewhere bright but out of strong direct sunlight. Remove faded flowers as necessary to keep the display looking its best.

After Flowering

Once flowering has finished, reduce watering for a few weeks to give the plant a short rest. As fresh growth begins, gradually return to its normal watering and feeding routine.

Plant Guide

About Schlumbergera

Schlumbergera naturally grows in humid forest environments rather than the hot, dry conditions associated with desert cacti. This is why it appreciates more moisture and humidity than many traditional cacti.

Why Does It Flower in Winter?

Shorter days and cooler temperatures encourage flower buds to form, with blooms typically opening during the winter months and often around the festive period.

Trailing Growth

Rather than producing conventional leaves, the plant develops flattened, jointed green stems. These gradually create an attractive cascading habit as the plant matures, with flowers appearing towards the ends of the stems.
