Crocus ‘Vanguard’ is one of the earliest large-flowered crocuses to flower in spring, with its beautiful two-toned flowers usually appearing in early February. Silvery-grey buds open to show gorgeous lilac petals with delicate striping and bright orange stamens. The flowers are a welcome source of early nectar for a range of pollinators, especially bumblebees. This reliable crocus is a deserving holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit and will come back year after year when planted in well drained soil. It’s happy in sun or light shade and naturalises well, gradually spreading to form drifts in lawns or under trees. It’s also ideal for pots and window boxes.
