  • Resistant to downy mildew
  • Ideal for an organic garden

Lettuce ‘Red Senorita’ produces dense heads of frilly dark red leaves that add fantastic colour to your summer salads. This top-quality lettuce has good disease resistance and can be sown successionally for a long cropping period.

Sow indoors

Sow thinly 1cm deep in clean trays or modules of firm, pre-watered compost. Place in warmth, 10-15°C and keep moist at all times.

Plant out

After the risk of frost has passed, plant into the required harvest position 25cm apart with 30cm between each row when plants have 3-4 true leaves.

Sow outdoors

Sow thinly 1cm deep in direct harvest location. Keep soil moist at all times. Thin to 25cm apart.

Tips

Keep well watered. Small sowings made every 3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Use netting to help prevent damage from birds and insects.

How To Grow

Lettuce is a fast-growing, easy crop that thrives in beds, borders, and containers. With many varieties to choose from, you can enjoy crisp, fresh leaves for months. Sow seeds little and often for a continuous harvest, keeping soil moist to prevent bolting. Pick leaves as needed or harvest whole heads for delicious homegrown salads.

Indoor Sowing
Fill modular trays with quality seed compost and sow one seed per module. Keep compost moist using capillary matting or gentle watering. Place trays in a bright, warm spot, avoiding direct sun. Once seedlings show true leaves or fill the modules, they’re ready to harden off.

Planting Out
Harden off seedlings over 7–14 days, then transplant into pots, beds, or borders. Allow 30cm between plants to give space for heads to form.

Outdoor Sowing
Direct sow from March to July, 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart. Thin seedlings to 30cm, using the thinnings in salads.

Companion Planting
Grow lettuce with chives or spring onions to deter aphids, or marigolds to discourage slugs. Plant under taller crops like tomatoes for dappled shade that keeps leaves crisp.

Harvesting
For the freshest flavour, harvest in the morning when leaves are cool and hydrated.
