Harvest
The first ever purple sugar snap pea, ‘Purple Magnolia’ produces beautiful dark purple pods that taste wonderfully sweet and crunchy, especially when picked young. With its bicolour purple flowers, it’s pretty enough to be grown in a border, and the pods are easy to spot against the green foliage, making harvesting simple.
Sow outdoors
Sow in a flat bottomed trench 5cm (2in) deep, 20cm (8in) wide. Water the trench and sow seeds 7.5cm (3in) apart. Carefully backfill the trench and firm lightly. Keep soil moist at all times. Allow 60cm (24in) between rows.
Support
As peas start to grow use netting supported by pea sticks or some broken tree twigs to support growth.
Aftercare
Keep well watered, especially in dry spells. Use netting to protect pea crops from bird or moth damage.
