Flowering
Sweet Pea Seeds ‘Summer Colours’ offer a stunning display of vibrant flowers reminiscent of the ripest summer fruits. Their sweet fragrance makes them perfect for cutting and bringing indoors, while they also thrive in the garden trained up obelisks or bamboo supports.
These seeds can be sown in September or October to overwinter as young plants in a cold frame or greenhouse, or sown indoors between January and April. One seed per deep module allows strong root development before planting out in April-May, ensuring a spectacular summer display.
How To Grow
Sweet peas are a beloved UK garden favourite, offering a kaleidoscope of colours and delightful fragrances from May through September. Their climbing habit makes them ideal for trellises, borders, wigwams, or even cascading over shrubs. With a little preparation, sweet peas are easy to grow and make excellent cut flowers for your home.
Indoor Sowing Sow seeds in pots filled with quality seed compost during October–November or late January–April. To aid germination, soften seeds by placing them on a damp towel or in vermiculite until they swell. Tough seeds can be lightly nicked opposite the ‘eye’ to let moisture in. Place pots in a warm greenhouse, conservatory, or cold frame, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged.
Planting Out Harden off Professional Grower Plugs before transplanting to a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure. Plant around 10 inches (25cm) apart, securing each to canes or a wigwam. Regular watering during dry periods supports healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Care and Maintenance Encourage strong, bushy plants by pinching out the top of main shoots when around 4 inches (10cm) tall. Feed with a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser to boost flowers and tie plants gently to supports as they grow. Dead-head faded flowers throughout the season to prolong flowering and maintain plant health.
Did You Know? Sweet peas are not only beautiful in the garden—they make charming cut flowers that fill your home with fragrance, allowing you to enjoy their blooms long after picking.
