How To Grow

Sweet potatoes are a warm-loving crop, perfect for UK gardens with plenty of sun. With some space, good soil, and regular care, they produce delicious, unique tubers that can be enjoyed straight from the garden.

Planting
Start with healthy slips, planting them deep enough to cover at least two sets of leaves. Water thoroughly after planting and ensure they have room to spread. Sweet potatoes prefer loose, well-drained soil, enriched with compost or well-rotted manure to improve structure and drainage.

Growing On
As vines develop, they will cover the ground, helping to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering is essential during dry periods, but avoid overwatering to prevent rot. Mulching around plants keeps the roots cool and maintains soil moisture.

Care and Conditions
Sweet potatoes thrive in warm, sunny locations and can be grown in garden beds, raised beds, or large containers. In cooler areas, black plastic mulch or a cloche can help warm the soil and extend the growing season. Give each plant enough space for its vines to spread for a healthy, productive crop.

Did You Know?
Sweet potatoes are both ornamental and edible—their trailing vines add beauty to the garden while producing nutritious tubers for the kitchen.
