Description

- Eat the young roots raw or leave to mature

This contrasting mix of red and white Japanese turnips looks good and tastes even better. The young roots are delicious eaten raw in salads, tasting sweet and crunchy, and the mature turnips have a lovely buttery flavour when cooked. Harvest them when golf ball sized for the best results.
Sow outdoors
Sow thinly, 1cm (1⁄2in) deep direct in the harvest location, in rows 30cm (12in) apart.
Thin
When large enough to handle, thin to 15cm (6in) apart.
Aftercare
Keep soil moist at all stages of growth as this prevents roots becoming ‘woody’.
Tips
Pick when small and young. Turnips do best in well dug soils.
