When we spoke to our customers earlier this year, we discovered that for many sowing seeds is easy, but knowing what to do with them afterwards is where it can become a bit trickier. This is why we've asked our resident seed expert Malcolm for some of his best advice on pricking and transplanting seedlings, along with some of the best tools for the job.

Did You Know?

Why Transplant Seedlings...

Pricking and transplanting seedlings means you can grow them in a richer compost, but most importantly it gives the roots more room to grow. Follow these five easy steps to prick out your seedlings and transplant into larger, growing on pots until ready to plant out into their final position.

A good guide to knowing when to prick out is when your seedling has a pair of true leaves - these are the leaves that resemble a mature plant, and are usually just a pair of oval leaves. Please note that the timings will vary depending on the size and type of the seedlings you're growing so it's always best to check the packet for instructions.

Your Step-By-Step Guide

1

Fill individual pots or a new seed tray with a good multi-purpose compost like Gro-Sure Seed & Cutting Compost. Use a dibber to make the holes and leave to the side ready for the lifted seedlings.

2

Then, using a widger to lever out the roots, gently lift one of the seedlings. Do this by holding the leaf and not the stem, as the stems can easily be crushed and would kill the seedling.

3

Lower the seedling into the planting hole. A good guide is to lower almost to the base of the leaves.

4

Firm it in carefully and ensure the seedling remains upright. We recommend seedlings are well-spaced from surrounding neighbours – check individual pack instructions for detailed sowing and transplanting space as these will differ by variety.

5

Water seedlings carefully, we recommend by using a fine rose on a watering can, and label. Place in a greenhouse or sunny windowsill to continue growing on.
