Acer palmatum or Japanese maple is a graceful deciduous tree whose delicate, mid-green leaves become orange, red or yellow in autumn. It adds a touch of Japanese elegance to the garden when grown as a specimen in the border or in a container on the patio. .

It is easy to grow in reasonable soil so long as there is adequate moisture to the roots. To restrict size, plant Acer palmatum in a container using loam-based compost. Position it in a sheltered spot to protect the delicate leaves from cold winds, choosing a site with light shade for good autumn foliage colour . The silhouette of Acer palmatum underplanted with early bulbs such as snowdrops or scillas creates a charming feature in the garden in early spring,
