  • Abundant round blue flowerheads in summer
  • Compact variety
  • Ideal for pots and small gardens
  • Pollinator-friendly

Agapanthus 'Charlotte' proves you don't need a large garden to enjoy the beauty of African Lilies. Its elegant stems rise above neat clumps of evergreen foliage, carrying rounded flower heads made up of pale blue to almost white blooms, each beautifully marked with a rich violet-blue stripe. The striking two-tone effect brings colour, elegance and structure to borders, patios and containers throughout summer.

Naturally compact, it's ideal for smaller gardens or growing in decorative pots, where the graceful flowers can be admired up close. Planted in groups or combined with ornamental grasses and other summer-flowering perennials, it creates a relaxed, contemporary look while attracting bees and other pollinating insects. The long-lasting blooms also make excellent cut flowers, bringing their beauty indoors in fresh summer arrangements.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Charlotte' thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during its first growing season, then feed in spring to encourage an abundance of flowers year after year.

How To Grow

Planting Your 2 Litre Agapanthus:

Supplied in a 2 litre nursery pot, your Agapanthus is well established and ready to plant straight into beds, borders or decorative containers. If you can't plant immediately, water regularly and keep the pot in a bright, sheltered position outdoors until you're ready.

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, free-draining soil. Agapanthus dislike sitting in wet ground, so improve heavier soils by mixing in horticultural grit before planting. For containers, use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, which provides excellent drainage and helps support the plant as it matures. Plant at the same depth as it was growing in the pot, firm the soil gently around the roots and water thoroughly.

Water regularly during the first growing season while plants establish, then only during prolonged dry spells. Feed every spring with a slow-release fertiliser and switch to a high-potash liquid feed, such as tomato fertiliser, once flower buds begin to form to encourage even more blooms. Remove faded flower stems after flowering to keep plants tidy, while the evergreen foliage provides attractive structure throughout the year.

Agapanthus flower best when grown in full sun and appreciate being slightly root restricted, making them an excellent choice for patio pots. In colder parts of the UK, protect container-grown plants during prolonged freezing weather by moving them to a sheltered position or wrapping the pot with fleece or bubble wrap to protect the roots.

Guide To Plant Sizes

What to Expect from a 2 Litre Plant:

Our 2 litre plants are well established and supplied in sturdy nursery pots, with strong root systems ready to thrive once planted. Plant size will vary depending on the variety and the time of year, but each plant has been carefully grown to provide the best possible start in your garden.

Some perennials may arrive in active growth or even in bud or flower during the growing season, while others naturally die back during autumn and winter before reappearing the following spring. This is perfectly normal and allows the plant to conserve energy before producing fresh new growth when conditions improve.

With the right care, your plant will quickly establish and continue to grow in size and performance each year, rewarding you with healthier growth and more flowers as it matures.

Get the Best from Your Plant

Plant in full sun
Agapanthus thrive in a sunny position, producing stronger stems, more flower heads and richer flower colour throughout summer.

Choose the right-sized pot
Agapanthus flower best when the roots are slightly snug, so avoid planting into an oversized container. Choose a pot that's only slightly larger than the nursery pot and move up a size only when the roots have filled the container.

Feed for more flowers
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring, then switch to a high-potash liquid feed once flower buds begin to form. This encourages an abundance of flowers throughout summer.

Protect pots in winter
'Charlotte' is hardy throughout most of the UK, but plants grown in containers are more vulnerable to freezing temperatures. During prolonged cold spells, move pots to a sheltered position or wrap the container with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap to help protect the roots.

Cut flowers for the vase
The elegant flower heads make excellent cut flowers and last well indoors. Removing spent flower stems also keeps plants looking tidy and encourages the plant to put its energy into healthy growth.

Enjoy bigger displays every year
As the clump matures, Agapanthus 'Charlotte' naturally produces more flower stems, rewarding you with an increasingly impressive display each summer.
