Harvest
Borage is a superb addition to any vegetable garden, where its vibrant blue star-shaped flowers are a magnet for bees and other pollinators. The flowers are edible, with a light cucumber flavour, and are delicious in salads. They’re also a great addition to chilled summer drinks!
Sow outdoors
Sow in well-drained soil that is weed-free and has been raked to a fine tilth, in a sunny position, lightly covering with a little more soil. Water as needed until established.
Thinning
When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 40cm apart.
Advice
Both the flowers and leaves are edible. Late summer and autumn sown seedlings may benefit from fleece protection when hard frosts threaten, but will flower earlier the following summer than spring sowings.
