Cabbage ‘Red Rookie’ F1 is an outstanding early red cabbage, producing firm, colourful heads full of flavour. Ready from mid-August, it’s a reliable crop with excellent quality and resistance to splitting.

This versatile cabbage is traditionally used for pickling but is equally delicious cooked as a winter vegetable or shredded raw for salads and slaws. Its vibrant colour adds visual appeal as well as taste to the plate.

With strong holding ability in the ground and good storage potential for several months after harvest, ‘Red Rookie’ is a practical and tasty choice for gardeners looking for a dependable red cabbage variety.

How To Grow

Cabbages are a kitchen garden staple, producing crisp, leafy heads full of flavour and goodness. From firm whites to crinkled Savoys and vibrant reds, they’re reliable and can be harvested for much of the year. Start seeds in modules and transplant when strong enough. Cabbages thrive in firm, nutrient-rich soil with full sun. Keep well-watered and protect from caterpillars and pigeons for healthy crops.

Indoor Sowing
Fill modular seed trays with fine seed compost, moistening before sowing. Sow one seed per module and keep compost consistently damp with a gentle mist. Place trays in a warm, bright spot out of direct sunlight. Once seedlings develop true leaves or roots fill the modules, harden them off before planting out.

Planting Out
Harden off seedlings over 7–14 days, gradually increasing outdoor exposure. Transplant into beds or pots, spacing 45cm between plants and rows.

Outdoor Sowing
Choose disease-resistant varieties to guard against club root. Use brassica collars to deter root fly and netting to protect from birds and insects. Sow or transplant 1cm deep, spacing 45cm apart in rows 45cm apart.
