Chilli Plants FAQs
Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Chilli Plants in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.
When to plant Chilli Plants
Chilli plants should be started indoors from January to April to give them a long enough growing season. Seeds should be sown in heated propagators or on a warm windowsill, as they require temperatures of at least 18–21°C to germinate. Transplant seedlings into larger pots as they grow and move them outdoors or into a greenhouse after the last frost, usually from late May to early June.
How to Plant Chilli Plants
Chilli plants thrive in warm, sheltered locations with full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. When planting in the ground, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure. If growing in containers, choose pots at least 20cm deep with good drainage. Space plants 30–45cm apart and provide support for taller varieties. Regular watering and feeding with a high-potassium fertilizer will encourage strong growth and fruit production.
How long do Chilli Plants take to grow?
Chilli plants take around 8 to 12 weeks from sowing to produce flowers and set fruit. Depending on the variety, chillies can be harvested from July onwards, with some faster-growing types ready as early as June. Harvesting regularly encourages more fruiting, and some plants will continue producing well into autumn if kept warm.
Why should I plant Chilli Plants?
Growing your own chillies allows you to enjoy fresh, organic fruit with a wide range of flavours and heat levels. Homegrown chillies are more aromatic and flavourful than shop-bought ones and can be used fresh, dried, or preserved. They are also highly ornamental, making them a great addition to any garden, greenhouse, or windowsill.
Where can I plant Chilli Plants?
Chilli plants can be grown in greenhouses, polytunnels, or warm outdoor gardens. In cooler regions, they perform best in containers that can be moved indoors when temperatures drop. A bright, sunny spot with good airflow is essential to prevent disease and ensure strong fruiting.
