Add a splash of sumptuous glamour to your garden with Clematis ‘Mrs Thompson’ producing spectacular purple flowers striped with scarlet, each flower up to 10cm across. This eye-catching clematis looks sensational in early summer, and often produces a second flush of flowers in early autumn. A vigorous self-twining climber, it can be trained over a pergola or a large obelisk.

Can’t plant straight away?
Place the pot in a sheltered spot outdoors and water regularly to keep the soil moist.
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Plant clematis deep, with the crown of the plant at least5-8cm (3in) below ground level to encourage bushy plants. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Clematis prefer their roots to be cool, so plant with the roots in shade or shield them by placing tiles or stones around the base of the plant.
Planting in containers: Plant in a container at least 45cm in diameter, with good drainage holes, filled with multi-purpose compost.
Aftercare
Group 2 clematis: Prune in late winter or early spring before growth starts, cutting out dead or spindly stems and cutting back the remaining stems to just above a strong leaf bud. Cut back by half in midsummer after the flowers have finished.
