Cornus, or dogwoods, are fast-growing deciduous shrubs which steal the show when their coloured stems brighten the muted tones of the garden in winter. Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' is aptly named, when in winter its branching stems of fiery orange-red glow in the border like bonfires. The leaves of Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' are light yellow-green and the shrub has white flowers clusters in May and June, attractive to pollinating insects. Preferring a sunny or partly shaded position, Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' can reach heights of 1.2 metres. A mass planting of this vibrant shrub makes a glorious display alongside the scarlet stems of Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ and the olive green stems of Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’. It also looks effective grown as a single specimen in a patio pot.
From the second spring after planting, cut the stems down to within 2-8 cm from the ground to encourage the development of new shoots and to maintain the shrub’s distinctive stem colour for the following winter.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant out.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
Water shrubs regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods
