Flowering
Delphinium 'Pacific Blue Bird' is one of the most striking plants for adding height and elegance to the summer garden. Its impressive flower spikes are packed with rich violet-blue blooms, each beautifully highlighted by a contrasting white centre, creating a spectacular display that draws the eye from across the garden.
Ideal for planting towards the back of sunny borders, the tall flower spikes combine beautifully with roses, lupins, foxgloves and hardy geraniums to create the timeless charm of a traditional cottage garden. The long-lasting blooms are equally impressive in floral arrangements, while their nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.
Easy to grow in fertile, well-drained soil, 'Pacific Blue Bird' thrives in a sunny, sheltered position where its tall stems can be protected from strong winds. Support the flower spikes as they develop and remove faded blooms after flowering to encourage a second flush later in the season.
How to Grow
Plant Delphiniums in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Before planting, improve the soil with plenty of garden compost or well-rotted manure to encourage strong root development and vigorous growth.
Water the plant thoroughly before planting, then dig a hole slightly wider than the pot and set the plant at the same depth it was growing in its container. Firm the soil gently around the roots and water well.
Space plants around 45–60cm apart to allow good air circulation and plenty of room to develop. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry spells, especially while plants are establishing and when flower spikes are developing.
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser and mulch around the base with compost or well-rotted manure to help retain moisture. As the tall flower spikes develop, support them with canes or plant supports to help prevent wind damage.
Remove faded flower spikes after the first flush to encourage a second display later in summer. Cut stems back once growth has finished for the season.
Guide to Plant Sizes
9cm Pot Supplied in a 9cm nursery pot, this is a healthy young plant with a well-developed root system, ready to establish quickly once planted into the garden. Depending on the season, plants may arrive in active growth, in bud, flowering or dormant.
Delphiniums are vigorous perennials that grow rapidly once established. With the right care, your young plant will develop into an impressive clump, producing tall flower spikes that return year after year.
