Echinacea ‘Magnus’ is an eye-catching sight with its deep pink daisy-like flowers with prominent orange cones, held on strong stems. Flowering from midsummer into early autumn, it looks sensational in the border, especially in prairie planting, and the bees love it. The flowers are ideal for cutting.

Sow indoors

Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover them with a dusting of sifted compost or vermiculite. Place in the warmth, 20-24°C and keep moist.

Grow on

Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle transplant into trays of potting compost 5cm apart or individually into 8cm pots.

Plant out

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when risk of frost has passed. Allow 45cm between plants.

Aftercare

Remove dead flower heads to encourage further flowers. Cut back dying / dead growth in autumn. Popular in mixed and herbaceous borders and as part of 'prairie' planting schemes.

How to grow

Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
