  • Elegant weeping cherry with striking double pink spring blossoms
  • New bronze-tinted foliage turns green by summer, adding seasonal interest
  • Perfect focal point with unique bark texture, ideal for smaller gardens

The Prunus Kiku shidare zakura, also known as Cheal’s Weeping Cherry, makes a stunning focal point with clusters of double pink flowers that smother its graceful, weeping branches in spring. Young bronze-tinted leaves add a striking contrast to the blossoms before maturing to green in summer. This ornamental cherry tree is treasured for its year-round interest, thanks to attractive bark and vibrant autumn colours. Though related to edible cherries, it is primarily grown for its beauty and seasonal display.

Rootstock: Colt

Age of tree at despatch: 2 years

Height at full growth: 4m/13ft

Most of our trees are delivered as bare-rooted specimens with an approximate height of 3.5ft - 5ft (105cm - 140cm), depending on the variety.

In case planting is delayed due to waterlogged or frozen soil, store the tree in a frost-free, airy space, keeping roots just moist in damp compost. For best results, prune in summer to prevent silver leaf disease.

To ensure successful pollination, select fruit trees from the same or adjacent flowering groups.

The majority of trees we ship have been pruned and may appear trimmed.

How To Grow

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil for optimal growth.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth as the root system.
  • Position the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and firm gently.
  • Water well and add a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

To grow a flowering cherry tree, start by selecting a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant your tree at the same depth it was growing in its container. Water thoroughly, then spread mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune only as needed to remove dead or damaged branches, and water regularly, especially in dry periods during the first few years. Feed annually with a balanced fertiliser to encourage stunning spring blooms.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Our ornamental trees arrive either as potted plants or bare-root trees, carefully selected for your garden. Here’s what to expect:

Potted Trees: Your tree will arrive potted, ready for planting. If you can't plant immediately, place the pot outdoors in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Bare-Root Trees: Delivered during autumn or winter when ready for planting. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist by covering them in soil in a cool location. Aim to plant within seven days of delivery.

Planting Tips:

  • In-Ground: Dig a hole slightly larger than the rootball. Place the tree at the same level it was in the pot or with the graft union just above the soil for bare roots. Backfill, add soil improver, firm in, and water well.
  • In Containers: Use a pot with drainage holes, layering stones at the bottom. Fill with quality compost, plant, and water well.

Seasonal Care: Plant hardy trees throughout the year, avoiding extremes. During winter, plants may arrive dormant or bare-root with no leaves. This is normal and encourages strong spring growth.

Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods. For bare-root trees, soak roots before planting. Add mulch in spring to retain moisture and nourish roots.
