Flowering
'Crataegus laevigata Paul’s Scarlet' is one of the most ornamental hawthorns you can grow, renowned for its masses of double, light-red flowers that open slightly earlier than most other varieties. A sport of 'Rosea Flore Pleno', it has rightly earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability, beauty and all-round garden performance.
Through summer, the tree carries deeply lobed green leaves on strong, thorny branches, before producing clusters of bright red berries in autumn which attract birds and pollinators. Tough, hardy and tolerant of urban, coastal and exposed conditions, it makes an elegant specimen or a characterful addition to a mixed boundary hedge.
Rootstock: Crataegus monogyna
Height at maturity: 8m (26ft)
Age at despatch: 2 years
Supplied as a bare-root specimen. Trees may be lightly pruned before despatch to encourage strong branching.
How To Grow
Hawthorn trees thrive in full sun and are very adaptable to various soil types, making them easy to grow in most garden conditions. Water young trees regularly, especially in dry periods, to help establish strong roots. Prune in winter to shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Known for their spring flowers and autumn berries, Hawthorn trees attract wildlife, adding seasonal beauty and biodiversity to the garden. With minimal maintenance, they’re a hardy and rewarding choice for various landscapes.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Our ornamental trees arrive either as potted plants or bare-root trees, carefully selected for your garden. Here’s what to expect:
Potted Trees: Your tree will arrive potted, ready for planting. If you can't plant immediately, place the pot outdoors in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the soil moist.
Bare-Root Trees: Delivered during autumn or winter when ready for planting. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist by covering them in soil in a cool location. Aim to plant within seven days of delivery.
Planting Tips:
Seasonal Care: Plant hardy trees throughout the year, avoiding extremes. During winter, plants may arrive dormant or bare-root with no leaves. This is normal and encourages strong spring growth.
Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods. For bare-root trees, soak roots before planting. Add mulch in spring to retain moisture and nourish roots.
