When to plant Kale Seeds

Kale seeds can be sown from March to June for a continuous harvest from autumn through winter. For an early crop, start seeds indoors from February, or direct sow outdoors from April once the soil has warmed up. Hardy varieties can be sown in late summer for overwintering.

How to Plant Kale Seeds

Sow seeds 1 cm deep in seed trays or directly into well-prepared, fertile soil. If sowing directly, space seeds about 15 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart. Once seedlings have developed a few leaves, thin or transplant them to 45 cm apart to allow room for growth. Kale prefers a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained soil and regular watering.

How long do Kale Seeds take to grow?

Kale seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days. You can start harvesting young leaves from around 6-8 weeks after sowing, with mature plants producing for several months. Kale is a cut-and-come-again crop, meaning you can pick leaves as needed without removing the entire plant.
