Some varieties have an extra helping hand too, such as pre-spaced seed tape, compact plants, disease resistance or other useful growing traits. So you can spend less time worrying about getting everything right and more time enjoying what you've grown.

Sowing Indoors Sow seeds thinly, 1cm deep, in trays or modules filled with firm, pre-watered compost. Place in a warm position at 15-20°C and keep the compost consistently moist until germination.

Sow seeds thinly, 1cm deep, directly into well-prepared soil where they are to grow. Keep the soil evenly moist and, once seedlings are established, thin them to 25cm apart to allow plenty of room for healthy growth.

Once the risk of frost has passed and your plants have developed 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into their final growing position. Space plants 25cm apart, allowing 30cm between rows to give them plenty of room to grow and form healthy heads.

Keep plants well watered and remove weeds regularly to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture. For a continuous supply of fresh lettuce throughout the season, make small sowings every 3 weeks.

Use netting to help protect plants from damage caused by birds and insects. Harvest as required and enjoy a steady crop of sweet, tender lettuce throughout the growing season.

Pick the heads once they have formed and feel firm, or harvest individual leaves as required for a continuous supply. The sweet, tender leaves are ideal for fresh salads, sandwiches and wraps.
