Onion ‘Ruby Red’ is incredibly versatile – whether picked young as spring onions or grown to full size, its mild, sweet flavour is a delicious addition to salads, sandwiches and a host of other dishes. With its deep burgundy-red skins and pink-tinged white flesh, it’s always an attractive crop.

Sow the seeds closely and pick the thinnings as salad onions, and grow on the remaining plants to full size for use in a wide range of dishes.

Sow indoors

Feb-March: Sow thinly 1cm (1⁄2in) deep in clean trays or modules of firm pre-watered compost. Place in constant warmth 15°C (60°F) and keep soil moist at all times.

Sow outdoors

March-April: Sow thinly cm (½in) deep, 5cm (2in) apart in rows 30cm (12in) apart or in clean module trays of firm pre-watered compost. Keep soil moist at all times. Protect from frost. Thin to 10cm (4in) apart.

Plant out

April: Plant out into the permanent position 10cm (4in) apart in rows 30cm (12in) between each row once plant have a sturdy root system; ensure the soil is well firmed.

Tips

Lift the onions before the foliage dies down completely. Leave to dry for a couple of weeks before storing.
