Description
Ailsa Craig onion have been going strong since 1887! This heritage exhibition variety was named after a small island off the coast of Scotland.
Ailsa Craig is a large, globe-shaped onion with golden, straw coloured skin and produces weighty onions perfect for the show bench.
The excellent keeping qualities and mild flavour make it a superb variety for the home gardener too.
Growing Calendar
How to Guide
Sowing Indoors
Alternatively sow indoors in modules in January or February. Sow five or six seeds to a module.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow when conditions are right for a good tilth (fine, crumbly soil) to be obtained (late February/March) in drills 12-15in/30-38cm apart and 3/4in/2cm deep.
Hardening Off/Planting Out
Plant out in April, the little clumps of bulbs from each module will push themselves apart as they grow in size.
