This patio crab apple is a dwarf variety of Malus ‘Red Sentinel’, a very popular crab apple with masses of pale pink flowers in spring, followed by red fruits in autumn. The fruits often last on the tree well into winter, providing colour and interest.
A beautiful small tree perfect for growing in a large container on a patio.
These trees have been grown and pruned to keep a compact shape, suitable for small spaces or grown in containers. Each winter, when the plant is dormant prune out any dead, diseased or damaged branches to a healthy bud. Cut back this seasons growth by 1/4 to an outward facing healthy bud. You can remove the tallest central branch, 'The Leader' to encourage side shoots and keep the height of the tree short
Plant in a large container, at least 50cm in diameter, placed on pot feet to minimize waterlogging and filled with a mixture of ordinary soil and a loam-based compost such as John Innes no 3, plus plenty of potting grit to improve drainage.
Water regularly, and feed fortnightly in spring and summer with a high potash feed like tomato feed.
Wrap the containers in hessian or bubble wrap over winter to protect the roots.
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any damaged or crossing branches.
Rootstock: M9
