Harvest
Grow pea Onward for a delicious crop of sweet large pods produced in big numbers on reliable plants suited perfectly for growing in the UK.
Onward is the perfect variety for continuing your pea crop of earlier varieties Douce Provence and Kelvedon Wonder.
This variety, worthy of exhibition on account of its handsome pods, is resistant to fusarium wilt to give you peace of mind that your plants won't succumb to disease.
We recommend that you create a surrounding structure of canes and string to house your pea Onward plants. Reaching 60cm (24in) in height this variety provides a windbreak for nearby tender crops while it gives you a big yield of crops.
How To Grow
Peas are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops to grow, offering sweet, fresh harvests straight from the pod. From mangetout and sugarsnaps to traditional shelling peas, sowing from seed gives you the best choice of varieties and a season-long supply.
Outdoor Sowing Sow directly into well-drained soil from early spring, placing seeds 5cm deep and spacing 7–8cm apart. Keep rows 60cm apart and provide support such as pea sticks, netting or trellis for climbing varieties. Water regularly, especially during flowering, to support healthy pod formation.
Feeding Start feeding when flowers appear. Apply a high-potash liquid feed every two weeks until the end of harvest, or use a granular fertiliser monthly, watered in well at the base of plants. This boosts flower and pod development for heavier crops.
Harvesting Pick peas from the bottom upwards, ideally in the morning when sugar levels are at their highest. Regular picking encourages plants to keep producing.
Companion Planting Peas enrich soil with nitrogen and pair well with carrots, radishes, lettuce, spinach, beans, cucumbers and brassicas. Marigolds and nasturtiums also make excellent companions, helping deter pests naturally.
