Flowering

Flowering
  • Native British wildflower
  • Fragrant golden-yellow flowers
  • Returns year after year
  • Loved by bees and other pollinators

Few spring flowers capture the charm of the British countryside quite like the cowslip. Its graceful stems carry clusters of gently nodding, golden-yellow flowers above neat rosettes of fresh green foliage, bringing a wonderfully natural look to the garden each spring.

Perfect for cottage gardens, wildlife planting and naturalising beneath trees, along banks or through sunny meadows, cowslips gradually establish into beautiful drifts that return reliably year after year. Their nectar-rich flowers are particularly valuable for bees and other early pollinating insects, making them as beneficial as they are beautiful.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, Primula veris thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it needs very little attention and rewards you with colourful spring displays that become more impressive with each passing year.

How To Grow

Garden Ready Perennials:

Garden Ready Perennials are supplied as strong, well-established plants that are ready to plant straight into beds, borders or containers. If you can't plant them immediately, keep the compost moist in a bright, sheltered spot. Standing the tray in a shallow layer of water for a short time will help prevent the compost from drying out.

Plant into fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, depending on the variety. Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots establish, then continue to water during dry spells until the plants are well established.

Autumn is the ideal time to plant perennials, giving them time to develop strong roots before winter. As temperatures rise in spring, they'll produce healthy new growth and beautiful flowers, returning year after year with very little maintenance. Remove spent flowers where appropriate and feed in spring to encourage vigorous growth and reliable flowering.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Garden Ready Perennials:

Supplied in trays of 12, Garden Ready Perennials are our most mature plug plants and are ready to plant straight into beds, borders or containers. Carefully grown on before dispatch, they'll establish quickly in your garden, rewarding you with reliable displays that return bigger and better year after year.
