Flowering
A native British wildflower often found in lawns and meadows, Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) produces short purple-blue flowerspires in summer that bees and other pollinators adore. Forming a low mat of leaves, it’s a good groundcover plant for a wildflower border. It spreads via creeping stems and also self-seeds easily, so deadhead it if you don’t want it to spread too far.
Sow outdoors
Sow in trays of pre-watered seed compost and cover lightly. Keep in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and allow up to 8 weeks for germination. Alternatively, sow directly into the final position from late April, in a sunny or partly-shaded spot in well-prepared soil and lightly cover with a little more soil.
Grow on
When large enough to handle. transplant into 8cm pots. Slowly acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after frosts.
Plant out
Choose a sunny, or partially shaded, spot in any well-drained soil. Plant approximately 30cm apart.
Tips
Will self-seed readily, so deadhead if you do not want this to happen.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
