Description
- Ideal for small gardens
- Stands up to UK weather
- Big harvests of big fruit
A rare spine-free variety which makes it easy to pick the tasty sweet fruits from August through to October. As a primocane raspberry variety you will also get fruit in the first year they are planted.
If you have a small garden you can put them into a large container and train them up an obelisk, wigwam or supports which also means the fruit is easier to net and protect from birds. The fruit is large and perfect for desserts and smoothies if the children have not eaten them all first!
Bred by the UK fruit research facility at East Malling, Autumn Treasure has an incredible UK heritage and can handle our weather with aplomb. If you are an organic gardener it also has great resistance to raspberry root rot which in our mind makes it a fantastic all-rounder and one of our best sellers.
Why buy primocane raspberries?
- You can pick primocane raspberries until the first frost!
- Plant & eat same year! Primocane varieties flower and fruit in the first year.
- They are easy to maintain: simply cut back to ground level in January/February.
- Short, sturdy canes need less support and are easier to grow - perfect for smaller gardens!
Primocane (autumn-fruiting) varieties fruit on canes produced in the current year. After cropping, these should be cut down to ground level to promote the growth of new canes. Allow primocane raspberry beds to spread up to 2.5ft/0.75m wide but dig out any canes which start to grow between the rows.
How you will receive your plants:
Your bare root raspberry canes will arrive at the perfect time for planting. Unpack them immediately and aim to plant as soon as possible after delivery.
Can’t plant straight away?
If you can’t plant right away, keep the canes in their packaging in a cool, dark place. It’s best to plant within seven days for optimal growth.
Planting tips and hints:
Before planting, soak the roots in water for about an hour to rehydrate them.
Planting in containers: If frost is still a risk, pot up the raspberry canes in large containers filled with multipurpose compost. Water well, and keep them in a greenhouse or cold frame until spring. Once the frost has passed, harden them off before planting outside.
Planting in the ground: Once the soil has warmed up in spring, you can plant your raspberry canes directly into the ground. Dig a hole wide enough to allow the roots to spread out. Place the cane so the roots fan out naturally, and ensure the crown (where the stems meet the roots) is level with the soil surface. Backfill, firm down the soil, and water well to settle the roots.
Feeding and aftercare: Keep the area around your raspberry canes weed-free. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch with well-rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and boost growth. Ensure your canes are supported by a trellis or framework, and water regularly in dry spells.
