A Carpet of Colour for Rockeries and Borders

  • Masses of colourful spring flowers
  • Compact evergreen cushions
  • Creates a colourful flowering carpet
  • Perfect for rockeries, walls and containers
  • Reliable hardy perennial

Compact, colourful and easy to grow, Saxifraga 'Floral Carpet' is an excellent choice for bringing lasting spring colour to even the smallest spaces. Its naturally cushion-forming habit creates a neat carpet of evergreen foliage, topped with masses of vibrant flowers that brighten the garden after winter.

Ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, walls, troughs and patio containers, these low-growing plants soften hard landscaping and provide valuable early colour. The nectar-rich flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, helping bring the garden to life as the seasons change.

Easy to grow from seed, Saxifraga 'Floral Carpet' thrives in a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant in generous groups for the greatest impact and enjoy a reliable display that returns year after year.

How To Grow

Sow Saxifraga 'Floral Carpet' seeds indoors from late winter to early spring on the surface of pre-watered seed compost. Gently press the seeds into the compost without covering them, as light is needed for germination.

Place pots or trays in a propagator or sealed bag at around 20°C in a shaded position. Germination usually takes 2–4 weeks. Once seedlings appear, remove the cover and move them to a cooler, brighter position.

If germination is poor after several weeks, place the seeds in a cold place at around 4°C for four weeks before returning them to warmth. This cold treatment can help improve germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Gradually harden plants off before planting outside after the risk of frost has passed.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water during prolonged dry spells and remove faded flowers throughout the season to encourage a longer-lasting display.

Expert Growing Tips

Improve Drainage
Saxifraga dislikes sitting in wet soil during winter. On heavier soils, mix horticultural grit into the planting area to improve drainage and keep plants healthy.

Water Carefully
Keep young plants well watered while they establish, but avoid overwatering once established. Mature plants are relatively drought tolerant in well-drained soil.

Keep Plants Looking Their Best
Remove faded flowers regularly to prolong the display and trim away any damaged foliage after flowering to keep plants neat and encourage fresh growth.

Refresh Mature Clumps
Established plants can be lifted and divided every few years to maintain vigour and create even more colourful displays around the garden.
