Harvest

Harvest
  • Recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Great to store for using over late autumn and winter
  • Great health benefits

A uniform and attractive brown-skinned shallot which produces good, fleshy bulbs with a delicious flavour- milder than onions and a little sweeter. Lovely to saute or light fry and add to sauces.

With RHS Award of Garden Merit Golden Gourmet has really impressed expert growers and they applaud this variety on account of its suitability to growing in the UK climate.

In every bulb there is an impressive amount of vitamin C and they are also rich in vitamins A, B and E, great for a warming meal when you're feeling out of sorts. Every bulb stores well, keeping well for several months when hung up in a cool and dry place.

How To Grow

When to Plant
Plant onion and shallot sets from mid-March to mid-April, once the soil is workable. For overwintering varieties, plant in autumn, around late October.

Where to Plant
Choose an open, sunny site with free-draining soil. Avoid recently manured areas. If your soil is heavy or compacted, improve it with organic matter or plant in raised beds for better drainage.

How to Plant
Gently push each set into the soil so the tip is just showing, spacing onions about 10cm apart and shallots 15–20cm apart. Space rows around 30cm apart. Firm the soil around the sets and water well after planting.

Aftercare
Keep the area weed-free and water during dry spells, especially in early growth. Avoid overwatering once bulbs begin to swell. Feed with a high potash fertiliser every few weeks in spring for the best results.

When to Harvest
Harvest from July onwards when the leaves start to yellow and topple over. Gently lift with a fork and leave to dry in the sun for a week or so before storing in a cool, dry place.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Sets are sold by weight, so counts may vary slightly from those stated on our website. Our sets or cloves are suitable for planting out immediately. However, if you’re unable to do so right away, we recommend keeping them in a cool, dark place.
