Snowberry 'Magical Candy'

Planting

Dig a hole around twice the width of the root ball and deep enough for the plant to sit at the same level it was growing in its pot. Gently loosen any tightly packed roots, position the plant in the hole and backfill with soil. Firm gently and water thoroughly.

Watering

Keep the soil regularly watered while your snowberry establishes, particularly during dry weather. Once established, it will need less frequent watering, although an occasional thorough soak will help during prolonged dry spells.

Feeding

Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if growth needs a boost. Adding a layer of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter around the base will also help retain moisture and improve the soil.

Light & Position

Plant Snowberry ‘Magical Candy’ in full sun or partial shade. For the best effect, choose somewhere you can easily see and enjoy its colourful berry-covered stems during autumn and winter.

Soil

This accommodating shrub grows in chalk, clay, loam or sandy soils and is suitable for both well-drained and moist but well-drained ground. Avoid positions that remain permanently waterlogged.

Give It Room to Grow

Allow enough space for its naturally spreading habit. ‘Magical Candy’ grows to around 1m high and can eventually spread 1–1.5m, making it well suited to mixed and shrub borders.

Pruning

Little regular pruning is required. Remove dead, damaged or unwanted growth and trim as necessary to keep the shrub within its allotted space.

Managing the Spread

Snowberry can produce suckers from around the base of the plant. Remove any unwanted suckers during winter if you want to prevent it spreading beyond its allotted space.

Enjoy the Winter Berries

Avoid unnecessary pruning while the stems are covered in berries. Leave them in place through autumn and winter to make the most of the seasonal display, then tidy the plant once the berries have finished.

Bring Colour to Autumn Borders

Use ‘Magical Candy’ to add interest to mixed borders as summer flowers begin to fade. Its vivid lilac-pink berries look particularly effective alongside evergreens, ornamental grasses and plants with rich autumn foliage.

Create a Bigger Display

Plant a single shrub among other border plants for a bright seasonal highlight, or repeat several plants through a larger border to create a stronger display of colourful berries.

Enjoy It Through the Seasons

Its dark green foliage provides an easy backdrop for other flowering plants earlier in the year, followed by small white-pink flowers and then the colourful berries that become the main attraction from late summer onwards.

Our shrubs are supplied in a range of pot sizes, from smaller 9cm pots through to larger specimens in 15 litre pots. The pot size refers to the container the plant is growing in rather than the overall height or spread of the plant.

What Will My Plant Look Like?

Plants are living products and their appearance naturally changes with the seasons. The height, shape, amount of foliage and stage of growth of the plant you receive may therefore differ from the photographs shown.

During spring and summer, plants may arrive in active growth, while those ordered later in the year may be changing colour, losing their leaves or entering dormancy. Deciduous shrubs can arrive with few or no leaves during autumn and winter. This is a normal part of their seasonal growth and they will produce fresh foliage when growth resumes.

Why Do Plants Vary in Size?

Even plants supplied in the same pot size can naturally vary in height, shape and fullness. Different varieties have different growth habits, and plants may also have been trimmed at the nursery to encourage healthy, well-branched growth. The eventual height and spread shown on the product page refers to the plant's mature size rather than the size you will receive.

When Your Plant Arrives

Unpack your shrub as soon as possible and check the compost, watering if it feels dry. If conditions are suitable, it can be planted into its final position. If you can't plant straight away, keep it in its pot in a sheltered position outdoors and water as needed to prevent the compost from drying out.

When Can I Plant?

Container-grown shrubs can be planted throughout the year when ground and weather conditions are suitable. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground, and take extra care with watering when planting during warm, dry weather.
