Three Colours for an Autumn Berry Display

  • Three ‘Magical’ Snowberry varieties in pink, soft pink and white
  • Colourful berries from late summer into winter
  • Creates an eye-catching display as summer colour fades
  • Grows in full sun or partial shade
  • Hardy and low maintenance

Bring extra colour to the later garden with three hardy Snowberries that combine contrasting pink and white berries from late summer into winter. Easy to grow in full sun or partial shade, their different shapes and colours work beautifully together in mixed and shrub borders.

Snowberry ‘Magical Candy’ – vivid pink berries are carried along arching stems on a lower, spreading shrub. Height: 0.5–1m. Spread: 1–1.5m.

Snowberry ‘Magical Sweet’ – softer pink berries bring a gentler shade to the collection, with a compact, arching habit. Height: 0.5–1m. Spread: 1–1.5m.

Snowberry ‘Magical Galaxy’ – masses of crisp white berries provide a fresh contrast, with a taller, narrower habit adding height to the group. Height: 1–1.5m. Spread: 0.5–1m.

Please note: Snowberry berries are ornamental and harmful if eaten. Wear gloves when handling the plants.

How to Grow

Planting

Plant your snowberries individually or group the three varieties together for a colourful mixed display. Dig a hole around twice the width of the root ball and deep enough for each plant to sit at the same level it was growing in its pot. Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.

Watering

Water regularly while the plants establish, particularly during dry weather. Once established, they will need less frequent watering, although an occasional thorough soak will help during prolonged dry spells.

Feeding

Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if growth needs a boost. Adding a layer of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter around the base will help retain moisture and improve the soil.

Where to Plant

Light & Position

Plant your ‘Magical’ Snowberries in full sun or partial shade. Choose a position where their colourful berries can be easily appreciated from late summer onwards.

Soil

Snowberries are accommodating shrubs that grow in chalk, clay, loam or sandy soils and suit both well-drained and moist but well-drained ground. Avoid positions that remain permanently waterlogged.

Give Them Room to Grow

Allow plenty of room for the shrubs to develop their natural shape. The three varieties vary slightly in mature height and spread, so space them with their eventual size in mind when creating a group display.

Pruning & Aftercare

Pruning

Little regular pruning is required. Remove dead, damaged or unwanted growth and trim as necessary to keep the shrubs within their allotted space.

Managing the Spread

Snowberries can produce suckers from around the base. Remove unwanted suckers during winter if you want to prevent the plants spreading beyond their allotted space.

Enjoy the Winter Berries

Avoid unnecessary pruning while the stems are covered in berries. Leave them in place to make the most of the seasonal display, then tidy the plants once the berries have finished.

Planting Ideas

Create a Mixed Berry Display

Plant the three varieties together to make the most of their contrasting berry colours. The combination of vivid pink, softer pink and white creates an eye-catching display through autumn and into winter.

Mix with Autumn Favourites

Pair your snowberries with ornamental grasses, evergreens and plants with colourful autumn foliage. Their berry-covered stems provide a bright contrast as the rest of the border changes with the season.

Bring Interest to Shrub Borders

Use the collection within a mixed or shrub border where the plants can provide leafy structure earlier in the year before their colourful berries become the main attraction later in the season.

Guide to Shrub Plant Sizes

Potted Shrubs

Our shrubs are supplied in a range of pot sizes, from smaller 9cm pots through to larger specimens in 15 litre pots. The pot size refers to the container the plant is growing in rather than the overall height or spread of the plant.

What Will My Plant Look Like?

Plants are living products and their appearance naturally changes with the seasons. The height, shape, amount of foliage and stage of growth of the plant you receive may therefore differ from the photographs shown.

During spring and summer, plants may arrive in active growth, while those ordered later in the year may be changing colour, losing their leaves or entering dormancy. Deciduous shrubs can arrive with few or no leaves during autumn and winter. This is a normal part of their seasonal growth and they will produce fresh foliage when growth resumes.

Why Do Plants Vary in Size?

Even plants supplied in the same pot size can naturally vary in height, shape and fullness. Different varieties have different growth habits, and plants may also have been trimmed at the nursery to encourage healthy, well-branched growth. The eventual height and spread shown on the product page refers to the plant's mature size rather than the size you will receive.

When Your Plant Arrives

Unpack your shrub as soon as possible and check the compost, watering if it feels dry. If conditions are suitable, it can be planted into its final position. If you can't plant straight away, keep it in its pot in a sheltered position outdoors and water as needed to prevent the compost from drying out.

When Can I Plant?

Container-grown shrubs can be planted throughout the year when ground and weather conditions are suitable. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground, and take extra care with watering when planting during warm, dry weather.
