Sweet Pea ‘Leamington’

‘Leamington’ is a very reliable Spencer-type sweet pea, producing richly scented lavender-blue flowers with beautifully waved petals. Its distinctive colour looks gorgeous in the garden, while the long flowering stems are excellent for cutting.

Sweet Pea ‘Unwins 120 Years’

Celebrating Unwins' long association with sweet peas, ‘Unwins 120 Years’ is a specially selected blend of Spencer-type varieties. Expect large, frilly and beautifully fragrant flowers in a gorgeous mixture of colours, giving you plenty of variety alongside the distinctive lavender-blue blooms of ‘Leamington’.

Sweet peas naturally develop long roots and benefit from being sown individually in deep cells. Visiroot gives those developing roots plenty of room from the moment you sow, while making it easy to see how your seedlings are progressing. Together, the two seed varieties give you a lovely mix of colour, fragrance and flowers for cutting.

When to Sow

Sow sweet peas under cover from January to March or from September to October. Autumn-sown seedlings will need protection through winter.

Fill & Sow

Fill the Visiroot cells with a good-quality seed sowing or seed and cutting compost. Sow one sweet pea seed into each cell around 1cm deep, then water gently.

Germination

Keep the cells somewhere bright and protected while the seeds germinate, following the temperature guidance on the seed packet. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.

Growing On

Once your seedlings are growing strongly, pinch out the growing tips at around 7–10cm tall to encourage bushier plants with more flowering stems.

Harden Plants Off

Before planting spring-raised seedlings outside, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions. Put them outside in a sheltered position during the day, bringing them back under cover at night, then gradually increase the time they spend outside.

Planting Out

Carefully open the Visiroot cells and remove each seedling with its roots and compost intact. Plant in a sunny position around 20cm apart and water well.

Give Them Support

Provide canes, netting, an obelisk or trellis for the climbing stems to grow up. Both varieties can reach around 1.8m tall, so start guiding the young stems onto their supports as they grow.

Keep Picking

Water regularly during dry weather and feed as the plants grow. Pick the flowers frequently and remove fading blooms to encourage your sweet peas to keep producing fresh flowering stems.

Give Roots More Room

Sweet peas develop long root systems while they're young. The deep cells give those roots plenty of room to grow downwards, helping you raise healthy, well-rooted seedlings ready for planting outside.

Easier Transplanting

Each seedling grows separately and the cells open when you're ready to transplant. This helps you remove the plant with its roots and compost intact, minimising disturbance as it moves into the garden or a larger container.

Use Them Again

Once your sweet peas have been planted out, empty any remaining compost and rinse the cells, tray and lid thoroughly. Allow them to dry and they're ready to use again for your next batch of flowers or vegetables.
