Plant support products are structures that help herbaceous and climbing plants grow strong and upright. Herbaceous plants have flexible, green stems and little to no woody growth, and they include most annuals and biennials, as well as many perennials. Many of these plants grow vigorously and can easily flop over onto neighbouring plants or spill onto lawns and paths without a little extra help. By installing a garden plant support early, plants can grow naturally around it. Don't worry about them looking out of place in your garden; they're typically hidden by foliage within a few weeks.
More vigorous or top-heavy plants need sturdier supports, while lighter plants can manage with simpler staking. For example, tall, upright perennials such as delphiniums and perennial sunflowers can be kept stable with simple canes or rods and soft twine. While large single-flowered plants like oriental poppies and foxgloves are well suited to single-stem ring supports. Need help identifying which garden plant support is right for you? Plants should be supported firmly but not too tightly, so they can still move naturally in the wind. Anchor the plant support securely into the ground, so they stay stable as plants grow. Use soft ties that won't damage stems and remember to loosen or adjust ties regularly to allow for natural growth. When tying stems to supports, use a figure-of-eight method so the tie sits between the stem and the cane, helping to prevent rubbing. Soft twine works best – 3 ply for smaller plants and 5 ply for larger, heavier ones. Gently train new climbing plants onto frames or trellises rather than forcing them into place. Check supports throughout the growing season to make sure plants remain secure, upright, and well supported.
