This native British wildflower is great for wildlife-friendly gardens, with long stems bearing flattened white flowerheads that are loved by hoverflies and other pollinators. Drought-tolerant and good in poor soils, Achillea millefolium is ideal for cottage gardens and informal planting.
Sow indoors
Feb-May, Aug- Oct: Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
Growing on
When large enough to handle, pot on into 8cm pots and grow on at a minimum temperature of 10°C.
Plant out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when danger of frost has passed. Allow 40cm between plants.
Aftercare
Cut back in autumn after the plant dies back. Divide clumps every 3-4 years. Flowers can be cut for use fresh or dried.
