Harvest

Harvest
  • Highly productive and self-fertile variety
  • Produces fruit even on young trees
  • Large, richly flavoured damsons with purple bloom
  • Hardy and compact - ideal for UK gardens

Damson trees are a must for any fruit grower, and this reliable, self-fertile variety delivers generous crops year after year. Even young trees fruit heavily, producing large, richly flavoured damsons covered in a distinctive purple bloom. Perfect for eating fresh, baking, or simmering down into rich autumn jams and preserves.

From April, the tree bursts into a canopy of white blossom that not only looks beautiful but also draws in pollinators like bees, helping nearby crops such as strawberries and tomatoes. Hardy throughout the UK, this compact and manageable tree reaches around 2.5m (8ft) when mature; a rewarding choice for smaller gardens or orchard-style planting.

How To Grow

General Tips:

  • Choose the Right Location: Select a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Ensure there’s adequate space for growth.
  • Timing: Best to plant bare root trees in late autumn to early spring, while potted trees can be planted throughout the growing season.

Bare Root Trees

  • Preparation: Soak roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole that is wider and deeper than the root system (around 60cm wide and 45cm deep).
  • Planting: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the graft union (swelling where the tree was grafted) is level with the soil surface. Backfill with a mix of soil and organic matter, gently firming as you go to eliminate air pockets.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil moist (but not waterlogged) during the establishment period (first year).
  • Mulching: Apply a 5-10cm layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Potted Trees (Up to 10 Litres)

  • Preparation: Water the tree a day before planting to ensure it's hydrated. Choose a hole slightly larger than the pot (around 15-30cm wider and 15cm deeper).
  • Planting: Remove the tree from its pot gently. If roots are tightly bound, loosen them slightly. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
  • Backfilling: Fill in with soil, gently packing it around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  • Watering: Water well after planting, ensuring the root ball is saturated. Continue to water regularly, especially during dry spells, until established.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Guide To Plant Sizes

7cm-10L Potted Shrubs

Trees, shrubs, perennials and climbers come in a range of pot sizes. Available through the year, they will be sent to you well packed for plant protection during transit. The appearance of your plant will vary depending on the season in which they are purchased. As a rule of thumb, the larger the pot, the larger the plant growth. Each increase in pot size means roughly another year’s growth for better instant impact.

Bare Root

Several of our plants come supplied as bare roots. Despite appearances, they are alive and well. They have been previously grown in the ground and lifted when dormant throughout the winter months, so that when you receive them they are strong, full of energy and ready to be planted out. This is our most economical way to buy many plant varieties including roses, strawberries, trees and bushes. Soak well prior to planting in their final position.
