Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is a much-loved evergreen shrub, admired for its vibrant seasonal colour and year-round appeal. In spring, it produces a striking flush of bright red young leaves that create a bold contrast against the older, glossy green foliage. As the season progresses, these fiery red shoots gradually mature to deep green, before another fresh burst of red growth appears after trimming in summer. This cycle of colour ensures the plant looks attractive for many months of the year.
Ideal for hedging, screening, or as a specimen shrub, Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is highly versatile and easy to maintain. Regular pruning not only helps to keep it in shape but also encourages new growth, extending the display of vivid red foliage well into the growing season.
Thriving in most well-drained soils and enjoying a sunny or partially shaded position, this hardy evergreen is a reliable choice for UK gardens. Once established, it is drought tolerant, low-maintenance, and resistant to many common pests and diseases. Perfect for adding structure, colour, and privacy, Photinia ‘Red Robin’ remains one of the best evergreen shrubs for creating an eye-catching garden feature or hedge.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Guide to Shrub Plant Sizes
Our Shrubs come in sizes from 9cm pots up to 15L. All are mature enough to be planted out into their final position in the garden.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot. If you have ordered your shrub during autumn or winter it may appear yellow or have no leaves. The plant is still healthy and ready to plant but looks different during different seasons.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Planting instructions:
Unpack and as long as the weather is favourable, put outside as soon as it arrives and give it a water.
When ready to plant, ensure it’s positioned in the right location and aspect in the garden.
Keep the area around it clear to avoid overcrowding which reduces its establishment and growth.
Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy, mix in a soil improver before backfilling. We also recommend adding plant feed into the hole before back filling to help establishment and growth.
Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
Feeding and aftercare: Keep it well watered and fed for establishment and growth. Trim in summer if needed to maintain the shape of the plant. Can be mulched in autumn/spring each year.
Planting and Flowering Months:
Planting and flowering months are subject to seasonal weather conditions. Shrubs can be planted all year round but take extra care during the cold winter months to avoid frost and hot summer months with extra watering.
