Bean Plants FAQs

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Bean Plants in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.

When to plant Bean Plants

The best time to plant bean plants in the UK is during late spring to early summer, typically from May to June, once the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed. Beans are sensitive to cold, so it’s important to wait until the soil temperature reaches around 12°C (54°F) or higher. If starting beans indoors, you can sow seeds from March to April, then transplant them outside once the weather has warmed up and the plants are strong enough.

How to Plant Bean Plants

To plant bean plants, choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Beans prefer soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, so prepare the area by removing any weeds and loosening the soil. For outdoor planting, sow beans directly into the ground in late spring to early summer (May to June) after the last frost, spacing the seeds 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart in rows, with rows spaced about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. If growing climbing beans, install supports such as trellises or bamboo canes at the time of planting. For bush beans, no support is needed, as they grow low to the ground. Plant the seeds about 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) deep, and water well after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Beans grow quickly and benefit from regular watering and a bit of fertiliser during the growing season.

How long do Bean Plants take to grow

Bean plants typically take 50 to 70 days to grow from planting to harvest, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Bush beans tend to mature more quickly, often within 50 to 60 days, while climbing beans may take a little longer, around 60 to 70 days. Beans are fast-growing plants, and you can start harvesting once the pods are fully formed but still tender. For a continuous harvest, it's helpful to sow beans in succession every few weeks throughout the growing season.

Why Grow Bean Plants?

Growing bean plants offers several benefits for gardeners. Beans are a highly productive crop, providing a generous harvest of nutrient-rich legumes, including varieties like runner beans, broad beans, and French beans. They are an excellent source of protein, fibre, and vitamins, making them a valuable addition to your diet. Beans are also easy to grow and can thrive in small spaces, making them ideal for containers, raised beds, or small gardens. Additionally, beans are nitrogen-fixing plants, which means they improve soil health by replenishing nitrogen levels, benefiting other plants in the garden. Growing beans also encourages biodiversity, as they attract pollinators and beneficial insects.

Where can you grow Bean Plants?

Bean plants can be grown in a variety of locations across the UK, as long as they are in sunny, sheltered spots with well-drained soil. Beans thrive in vegetable gardens, raised beds, and containers, making them ideal for small spaces. Climbing beans require support, such as trellises or bamboo canes, and are perfect for vertical gardening. Beans can be grown in loamy or sandy soils, but they do best in fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Beans are well-suited for greenhouses or polytunnels if you want an earlier harvest or live in a cooler area, but they can also be successfully grown outdoors once the weather is warm enough.
