What is a calibrachoa plant?

They're also called million bells plants thanks to their clusters of delicate, bell-shaped petals and flowers. Known for their bright, cascading flowers, calibrachoas are perfect for adding long-lasting colour to hanging baskets and borders around gardens or patio areas.

Native to South America, calibrachoas are similar in
appearance to petunias, but they're usually regarded as a different species. These low-maintenance,
self-cleaning plants will reward you with an abundance of flowers throughout the summer, making them an excellent choice for both seasoned and novice gardeners.

How do I plant calibrachoa million bells?

Calibrachoa plants are as beautiful as they are versatile. You can plant them in pots, window boxes or hanging baskets for stunning backdrops in your summer garden. Whether you're planting million bells in hanging baskets or large containers, follow these
steps:

  • Firstly, pot plug million bells plants individually into 3.5-inch pots.
  • Place them on a sunny windowsill or inside a
heated greenhouse, at least until mid-May. Harden off your plants so they can acclimatise to the weather conditions in your garden.
  • After the last frosts of spring, you can plant calibrachoa in multi-purpose compost.
  • Plant each calibrachoa plant carefully around the edges of hanging baskets or a large pot on feet with drainage holes. These flowers suffer in wet soil, so drainage is crucial.
  • Water immediately after planting and keep your million bells well-watered. In very hot weather, water them daily if required.
  • Calibrachoas thrive in well-draining soil and need sunlight. So, leave your calibrachoa plants in a warm, sunny spot and enjoy their colourful splendour!

When is the best time to plant calibrachoa?

As one of our favourite summer bedding plants, million bells are best planted in late spring. To help you, when it's time to plant calibrachoa, we'll send them to you in the healthiest condition possible. We deliver these gorgeous flowers between early April and June.

Where should I plant calibrachoa?

We suggest planting million bells in hanging baskets or large containers on raised feet.
This not only gives you an impressive trailing display once your calibrachoa plants are in full bloom, but it also allows the soil to drain freely with each watering. Million bells can also be planted on the ground, but you'll lose some of their stunning visual effect.

How should I store my calibrachoa plant over winter?

Calibrachoa plant care can be tricky in winter because this plant won't survive the harsh temperatures in the UK. At the end of summer, you should expect to add these plants to your compost or garden waste bin.
With dedication, it is possible to overwinter million bells. To do this successfully, you'll need to repot existing healthy plants indoors before the first frost of winter. Carefully dig up the plant, collecting as much of the root system as you can. Using fresh potting soil, place the plant in a container and transport it to a dry space, such as a garage, which stays above freezing. If the plant shows signs of dormancy, you may need to cut it back.

Why have my calibrachoa plant leaves turned yellow?

If the leaves on your calibrachoa turn yellow, it's typically a sign that the plant needs nutrition! Add slow-release plant food, either in tablets or granules, to the soil as soon as possible.

Can I plant calibrachoa seeds?

No. Calibrachoa plants are hybrids, which means they're the product of a cross-pollination between two different plant varieties and do not produce seeds. This means that the best way to enjoy these magnificent blooms in your garden is to find and buy your favourites from our range of million bells plants for sale.
