How To Grow
When to Plant Plant allium bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes. This gives them time to establish roots before winter sets in.
Where to Plant Choose a sunny, well-drained spot—raised beds or borders work well. Avoid areas that become waterlogged in winter. Alliums prefer not to be disturbed, so plant them where they can remain for a few years.
How to Plant Plant bulbs at a depth of around three times their height, typically 10–15cm deep and spaced 10–15cm apart. Place the pointed end facing upwards, then cover with soil and water well.
Aftercare Alliums are drought tolerant, so water only during prolonged dry spells. In spring, feed with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage strong stems and blooms. Taller varieties may need light staking to support flower heads in windy weather.
End of Season Care After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally—this helps feed the bulb for next year. Avoid cutting it off while still green. You can leave the decorative seed heads for winter interest or collect seeds if you'd like to propagate more.
