Harvest

Harvest
  • Very sweet flavour
  • Round roots with intense red colour
  • Best picked young as baby beets
  • Reliable performer

An exceptionally sweet-flavoured beet, Beetroot ‘Bettollo’ is best picked young as baby beets but can also be left to mature. The roots are beautifully shaped, with an intense red colour, and packed with health-giving antioxidants. A reliable perfomer in the vegetable garden, delicious cooked or pickled.

Sow outdoors

Sow direct into the required harvest position, 2.5cm (1 in) deep. Keep soil moist at all times to prevent roots becoming dry and woody.

Thinning

Thin out to 10cm (4in), or 5cm (2in) for baby beets. Use thinnings in baby leaf salads. Use fleece to protect crop from frost or cold wind. Twist off the tops to prevent “bleeding”. Beetroot can be lifted and stored in sand; ensure they are kept frost free.

How To Grow

Beetroot is a rewarding crop, producing vibrant roots full of flavour and nutrients. Quick to grow and easy to manage, it provides a steady harvest from summer into autumn. Enjoy it roasted, pickled, fresh in salads, or use the young leaves as a tasty addition to dishes. Beetroot also stores well, so you can enjoy homegrown goodness long after the season ends.

Outdoor Sowing

Sow seeds from spring until mid-summer, thinly in drills. For multigerm seeds, thin seedlings to 10cm apart once large enough. Monogerm seeds produce one seedling each and need no thinning.

Beetroot thrives in fertile soil, so enrich beds with organic matter before sowing. Water regularly in dry spells to reduce bolting. Space rows 30cm apart and sow seeds 3cm deep for best results.

Companion Planting

Companion plants can help boost beetroot growth and deter pests:

  • Lettuce & Spinach – provide shade and retain soil moisture
  • Marigolds – deter aphids and nematodes
  • Onions & Garlic – naturally repel pests
  • Dwarf Beans – fix nitrogen, supporting strong growth

Harvesting

Pick young leaves and thinnings for salads or stir-fries. Roots are nutrient-rich and versatile: cook, pickle, or slice raw for salads and barbecues. Regular picking encourages fresh growth and a longer harvest window.
