Blueberry Liberty is a mid-season variety with consistently large, uniform, light blue fruit with an aromatic and sweet flavour. Needs acid soil but will grow well in a large container in ericaceous compost if your soil is alkaline. Blueberries put on much of their root growth in June-early September so this is the perfect time to plant.
There is nothing tastier than picking your own fruit fresh from the garden. We have selected some of the best in new fruit breeding for your experience and these 1.5L potted plants are just raring to grow! They will be quick to establish and quick to fruit – giving an almost instant fruit garden later in the growing year. They are excellent for planting in any gaps you might have in the garden in high summer.
How To Grow
Blueberries require a sunny spot with well-drained, acidic soil (pH between 4.5 and 5.5). They don’t tolerate waterlogged soil, so choose a location with good drainage.
Blueberries need acidic soil, so it’s important to amend your soil before planting. If your garden soil is too alkaline (pH above 7), follow these steps:
Blueberries have shallow roots and prefer consistent moisture, but they do not like being waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and use rainwater if possible, as tap water can be alkaline.
Blueberries are sensitive to fertilisers, so use a specialist ericaceous (acid-loving) fertiliser in early spring. Be cautious not to over-fertilise, as this can lead to poor fruiting.
Pruning helps blueberries grow strong and productive. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Blueberries are generally pest-resistant but can be susceptible to fungal diseases like powdery mildew or root rot in overly wet conditions. Common pests include aphids and birds.
Blueberries typically start producing fruit in the second or third year after planting. They ripen over a few weeks, so you’ll need to pick them in stages.
Blueberries are hardy, but in particularly cold winters, you may want to protect the plants from frost.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Bare Root Plants: Several of our plants come supplied as bare roots. Despite appearances, they are alive and well. They have been previously grown in the ground and lifted when dormant throughout the winter months, so that when you receive them, they are strong, full of energy and ready to be planted out. This is our most economical way to buy many plant varieties including roses, strawberries, trees and bushes.
Seedlings: Seedlings are young plants that have grown from seeds and are still small, usually with just a few leaves. They are in the early stages of growth and are ready to be potted on or planted outdoors to continue developing.
Plug Plants: A wide range of our varieties come in plug size, including Strawberries, Tomatoes, Chillis, Peppers, Cucumbers and Courgettes. Grown in individual cells with a bio-degradable membrane that will break down in the soil, no need to remove before planting. Pot and grow on to form larger plants that can be planted later in the season. Protect from frost if necessary.
9cm Plants: Our 9cm plants are larger and much more established than our plug ranges, meaning they are ready to plant out straight away. These will establish quickly and produce flower and fruit much quicker than smaller plugs. Protect from frost if required.
1L+ Plants: A substantial plant with many already developed flowers or even early onset of fruit if the season has been early. Great for filling in gaps or plating into patio containers.
Grafted Plants: Grafted plants are created by joining together two different plant varieties, typically by attaching the stem of one onto the root system of another. This process allows for desirable traits, such as disease resistance or better fruit production, to be combined into a single plant.
