Growing well in most conditions, it’s a deserving recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Vigorous and quick-growing, ‘Masterpiece Green Longpod’ is ready to harvest in early summer from spring sowings, and any extra beans freeze well for later use.

Sow indoors

Sow individually in clean pots or modules of compost 5cm (2in) deep. Water well.

Plant out

Plant out indoor raised crops in April or May 10cm (4in) apart in double rows 25cm (10in) apart. Leave 60cm (24in) between each double row.

Sow outdoors

Sow direct into the required harvest position, 5cm (2in) deep, 10cm (4in) apart in double rows 25cm (10in) apart. Leave 60cm (24in) between each double row. Keep soil moist at all times.

Tips

Pinch out growing tips when in full flower to deter blackfly. Pick when young for best flavour. Requires support.
