Award-winning Broad Bean ‘Masterpiece Green Longpod’ produces a plentiful crop of flavourful pods with up to 7 beans per pod. Growing well in most conditions, it’s a deserving recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Vigorous and quick-growing, ‘Masterpiece Green Longpod’ is ready to harvest in early summer from spring sowings, and any extra beans freeze well for later use.

How To Grow

A staple of the vegetable garden for centuries, broad beans are easy to grow and one of the first crops of the year to harvest. They grow best in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the ground ahead by clearing weeds and stones, then dig in garden compost or well-rotted manure. Lining a shallow trench with newspaper can also help retain moisture.

Indoor Sowing
For an early start, sow indoors using deep pots or root trainers filled with moist, free-draining compost. Sow one seed per pot around 5cm deep and keep them in a cool, bright spot—broad beans don’t need high heat to germinate. This is ideal if outdoor conditions are too harsh early in the season.

Planting Out
Once seedlings reach 10–15cm tall, harden them off gradually over 7–14 days before transplanting. Place outside for a few hours each day, increasing exposure to wind and temperature. Transplant into beds or larger pots, spacing plants 20cm apart in rows 30cm apart.

Outdoor Sowing
Direct sowing is simple and effective. Sow seeds 5cm deep in well-prepared soil, keeping the ground moist as seedlings establish. Provide support for taller varieties to keep them upright.

Harvesting
Pick pods as soon as they ripen, and harvest regularly to encourage more pods. Frequent picking stimulates further flowering and extends your crop.
