Cabbage ‘Spring Greens Verve’ can be harvested practically any time of year, producing dark green leaves with a tender texture and superb mild sweet flavour. Slow to heart, with heads a handy-sized 400-500g (1lb) in weight, it’s a valuable addition to the vegetable garden, with good disease resistance.
Sow indoors
February-April: Sow seeds thinly 1cm (½in) deep in clean trays or modules of firm pre watered compost. Place in warmth 16°C (61°F). Keep soil moist at all times.
Grow on
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings 5cm (2in) apart to trays or individual pots of potting compost . Gradually accustom them to conditions outside for 2-3 weeks before planting out to their cropping position. Water plants generously in dry weather.
Sow outdoors
May-October: Sow seeds thinly in a shallow, pre-watered row 1cm (½in) deep. Lightly cover seeds with a little soil. Keep soils moist until seedling are established, transplanting when large enough. Thin to 10cm (4in).
Transplant
When the seedlings have produced about four true leaves, transplant them to their cropping positions. Firm in, and keep well watered in dry spells
Tips
Avoid planting in the same soil where Brassicas have grown the previous year. Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
