How To Grow
Carrots are a rewarding crop, producing sweet, crunchy roots perfect for salads, roasting, or snacking fresh from the soil. With varieties ranging from classic orange to purple and yellow, they’re versatile and colourful. Sow directly into light, well-draining soil free from stones for straight roots, or in deep containers on a sunny patio. Keep soil consistently moist for good germination and thin Professional Grower Plugs as they grow to allow space for strong roots.
Outdoor Sowing Carrots dislike transplanting, so sow directly. Protect early sowings with fleece. Sow 1cm deep in shallow drills, sowing thinly to reduce thinning later, as thinning can attract carrot fly. Water regularly in dry spells. Thin Professional Grower Plugs to 5–8cm apart if required.
Companion Planting Plant onions, leeks, or chives nearby to deter carrot fly. Lettuce and radishes make good companions, growing quickly and marking carrot rows. Avoid planting near dill or parsnips as they compete for space and nutrients.
Harvesting Twist don’t tug! Grip tops close to the soil and twist gently to pull, avoiding breakage. Use a garden fork to ease them out if soil is firm.
