With its silvery-white lobed foliage, Cineraria maritima ‘Silver Dust’ makes a fantastic foil for flowering plants and looks superb in containers and bedding schemes. A very easy-to-grow, sun-loving plant usually grown as an annual, it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliable performance.

Sow indoors

Sow thinly in trays of firm, pre-watered compost, lightly covering with a little more compost. Place in warmth, 15- 20°C and keep moist at all times. Allow 2-4 weeks for germination.

Grow on

When large enough to handle transplant into trays of potting compost 5cm apart, or individually into 8cm pots. Grow on at a minimum temperature of 10°C.

Harden off/plant out

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when the danger of frost has passed. Allow 30cm between plants.

Advice

Although technically a perennial, Cineraria is usually grown as an annual. Small yellow flowers may appear in late summer.

How to grow

Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
