How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot, ready to plant out.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Plant clematis deep, with the crown of the plant at least 5-8cm (3in) below ground level to encourage bushy plants. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Clematis prefer their roots to be cool, so plant with the roots in shade or shield them by placing tiles or stones around the base of the plant.

Planting in containers: Plant in a container at least 45cm in diameter, with good drainage holes, filled with multi-purpose compost.

Aftercare

Water regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods

Group 2 clematis: Prune in late winter or early spring before growth starts, cutting out dead or spindly stems and cutting back the remaining stems to just above a strong leaf bud. Cut back by half in midsummer after the flowers have finished.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Guide to Climbers Plant Sizes

Our Climbing Plants come in sizes from 7cm pots up to 7.5L. All are mature enough to be planted out into their final position in the garden.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot. If you have ordered your climber during autumn or winter it may appear yellow or have no leaves. The plant is still healthy and ready to plant but looks different during different seasons.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.

Planting instructions:

Unpack and as long as the weather is favourable, put outside as soon as it arrives and give it a water.

When ready to plant, ensure it’s positioned in the right location and aspect in the garden. Climbing plants should be positioned 45cm from the base of a wall, fence, trellis or structure to grow up. When planting, point the climber in the direction you want it to grow by tilting the rootball at a 45 degree angle.

Keep the area around it clear to avoid overcrowding which reduces its establishment and growth.

Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy, mix in a soil improver before backfilling. We also recommend adding plant feed into the hole before back filling to help establishment and growth.

Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.

Feeding and aftercare: Keep it well watered and fed for establishment and growth. Apply wires or ties to support the climber and train it to the structure. Can be mulched in autumn/spring each year.

Planting and Flowering Months:

Planting and flowering months are subject to seasonal weather conditions. Recommended planting months for each variety are displayed on each product page. Climbing Plants can be planted for almost all months of the year but take extra care during the cold winter months to avoid frost and hot summer months with extra watering.
